Is this you?

"People like us are always looking for the next thing to do to our homes.  We just can't help ourselves.  I once met a reader who told me she'd just "upgraded" every wastebasket in her house.  In one day, all the utilitarian ones she'd bought over the years on the cheap were gone, replaced by pretty but not expensive ones.  Her husband looked on, not sure why wastebaskets mattered so much, but to her, the whole house instantly felt much fresher and more together.  I totally get it.  I have no idea where this impulse to improve the nest comes from, but it's an important part of who we are.  If I could play the violin, I would.  If I could paint a picture, I would.  My canvas is my home, and a brushstroke here and there is how I express myself."

I don't believe in wastebaskets, never have. I guess I get it from my mother. When we lived in Japan in the 1950's, she bought all sorts of hibachis, metal, pottery, and ceramic and has been using them ever since. I use crocks, baskets, leather men's hat boxes, old minnow buckets, brass cachepots, birch bark things, Nantucket baskets, except in the kitchen, where I have to have a covered one so the dogs don't eat the garbage. I don't think I've ever bought a soap dish either. It is nicer to use a plate or piece of silver, or an old ashtray, or pin tray. But I'm crazy. I have some toilet roll covers, not the ones that look like a doll, and have a pattern to make my own from fabric and have a book to knit really nice ones. Ann Teri, you know who I am (Shells)

That would be me, yes. We actually found a vintage tulip shaped aluminum waste basket at a flea market last week, it's awesome!

I just found your blog through "secret of domestic bliss".

I understand this completely (except for the husband, that part doesn't describe my husband at all, he is as totally into it as I am). No matter how many times I tell myself that "this is it, this is the perfect combination" I always long for a change, to shake things up a bit.

I stopped using traditional waste baskets years ago, except for the kids rooms. I'm still looking for the perfect replacements for theirs. But you know what they say, "it's not the kill, it's the thrill of the chase."
